What does being a preservation professional mean to you?: To me, being a preservation professional means acting as a steward of our environment—honoring the stories, craftsmanship, and cultural value of historic structures while ensuring they remain usable, safe, and relevant for future generations. It requires a balance of respect and innovation: preserving the integrity of original design and materials while thoughtfully integrating modern systems, accessibility, and performance standards.
It also means approaching each project with humility and curiosity. Every historic property carries a narrative shaped by its architecture, community, and past occupants. My role is not to overwrite that narrative, but to protect and elevate it—making informed decisions that preserve character-defining elements, safeguard authenticity, and reflect best practices rather than convenience.
Finally, preservation is collaborative. True success comes from engaging historians, architects, and tradespeople to align vision, practicality, and responsibility. As a preservation professional, I see myself not just as a builder, but as a caretaker of heritage, ensuring that what we restore today continues to inspire and serve for generations to come.
